Kickin' it in Kearney
Kearney is a great place to take a step back into history through some of
the area attractions. The Fort Kearney State Historical Park and Recreation
Area has a full day of adventure for everyone. While at Fort Kearney, you'll
hear how the Fort served as a protector for pioneer wagon trains as you hear
the story through the interpretive center, carpenter shop, powder magazine,
blacksmith shop and the split log stockade. With more than 150 acres of land
that serves as a recreation area, you'll be able to take a swim at the sand
beaches in the recreation area, enjoy a picnic and end your day with a hike
along the trail.
The Trail Blaze Maze is a newer attraction for everyone that promises to
offer a lot of laughs and fun. You'll get the chance to see how wise you are
as you try to make your way through a crazy labyrinth of turns and twists,
while racing against the clock. This isn't a small maze by any means as the
fort-like maze spreads out over 4,800 square feet. While you're trying to
find your way, you'll pass four checkpoints where you can get your "passport" stamped.
Head down to the Trails & Rails Museum on West 11th Street to trace through
the history of the transportation through Buffalo County. This is the site
where the Mormon Trail passed years ago. You'll have the chance to imagine
what life was like as you see a steam engine from Union Pacific as well as
other archives. Displays at the Kearney Trails & Rails Museum include a
church, a 1898 depot, an 1871 school house and the 1880's Freighters Hotel.
The Museum of Nebraska Art will give you a chance to view Nebraska in a
different way. You'll see 175 years of Nebraska through art that includes
19th century to contemporary style. Enjoy some of your time in the Outdoor
Sculpture Garden and before you leave, stroll through the Museum Shop where
you'll find unique gifts to remember your trip.
